Objectives In this course the students gain more insight into the techniques to isolate and recombinate genes and to produce genetically engineered organisms.
Prerequisites Genetics, biotechnology, biochemistry and informatics
Topics Theoretical course:
Restriction endonucleases, cloning vectors, recombinant DNA technology, DNA sequencing techniques, cloning DNA sequences, screening cDNA libraries and gene mapping
Practical exercises:
Construction of recombinant DNA molecules involving PCR, DNA extraction, digesting and ligating DNA, cloning experiments and agarose gelectrophoresis.
Teaching Methods Lectures, lab exercises and project work in groups
Materials used syllabus “Cel- en Gentechnologie”, lab manual, scientific publications, exercises involving word wide web searches

Assessment Theoretical course: oral examination with written preparation. Evalution of laboratory section is based on lab reports.
