Objectives To acquire knowledge about the architecture of a database and the 3 existing models: hierarchical, network and relational.
To obtain some practical experience with SQL.
At the end of the course the student should be able to give advice and define pro and contra when buying a database.
Prerequisites Knowledge of the different kinds of relations. Definition of the different kinds of keys. Elementary file organisation.

- Introduction to the hierarchical (DL/I) and network model (DDL - DML).
- Thorough knowledge of the relational model and SQL. Relational algebra. QBE.
- DB security and consistency.
- Transactions and concurrency problems.
- C/S-applications and related architectures.
- Distributed databases. Transparencies
- Middle ware.
- Data warehousing and data mining.
- Principles of ODBC and object-oriented databases.
