Objectives
Learning the basics of 4GL-tools by working with a repository and Integrated Development Environment. Two different 4GL-tools have been choosen: one supporting the model-driven paradigm (Java based workbench based on J2EE) and one using the normal event-driven paradigm (Oracle Developer). The main objective of this course is not only learning a new way of writing fast applications (Rapid Applic. Develop. = RAD) with a maximum of documentation but also to integrate courses like analysis, programming, logic and databasetechniques into one whole IT life-cycle by implementing it with several small projects.

Prerequisites
Good knowledge of SQL , database administration and Java.

Topics
Working with Oracle Developer: Forms6i, PL/SQL & triggers. Local & stored procedures.
Working with the new Portal philosophy of Oracle iPortal for realizing complex internet projects.
Writing portlets or Web services in Java if time left.
PRACTICAL PART: Oracle Forms-6, Dynamic Webforms (Oracle iPortal), Crystal Reports-7 for reporting.

Teaching Methods
Lectures, demonstrations, case studies, exercises, group presentations. Use of Netopschool and Blackboard. Additional information is studied with the aid of E-learning. To have better response times the course data is downloaded from the Smartforce site and burned onto a CDROM which is then distributed to the students. The impression on the student side was very positive because the course contents were complementary to the normal theory.

Materials used
Teacher's own course material which is copied and distributed to the students. Because of the Ventura format the texts could not be published on the internet. Also scientific & technical literature can be looked up on the Oracle OTN site.

Study guidance
During the lab projects the progress of the student is periodically controlled.

Assessment
Written examination: the main part is naturally the writing of triggers in PL/SQL or Java. For the assignments the student has to give a demo of what he has realized at the end of the lab.

Study costs
The total cost of photocopies comes in the area of 20 euros. Because the course is rewritten every year it is very difficult to give an exact price.
