Objectives

The main objective is to provide a solid and broad scientifical basis (
chemical and fysicochemical) which in practice gives access to the
application of a great variety of qualitative and quantitative analytical
methods and which allows to interpret correctly the derived special
literature. The theoretical basic principles have to be assimilated and are
linked to the derived instrumentation and a great number of industrial
applications (quality control, problem solving,...)

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of inorganic and organic chemistry (candidatures)

Topics

Theory:
General information (reporting, graphic representation, statistical
background, sampling methods, ...)
Wet chemical analysis (volumetric and gravimetric procedures)
Instrumental characteristics
Electrochemical methods: conductometry, (electrolysis)
Optical methods: interaction electromagnetic radiation (matter, molecular
and atomic absorption / emission (flame photometry, ICP, AES, AAS (flame,
graphite furnace), XRF, atomic fluorescence (AFS),chemiluminescence, NAA)
Thermal analytical methods (TGA, DTA, DSC, TMA, thermometric titrations)
Chromatographic techniques: general basic principles, partion mechanisms,
GC( packed and capillary columns), HPLC (straight phase, reversed phases)
and derived procedures GPC, IEC, ...

Exercises
Elementary and advanced manipulations (qualitative and quantitative level).
Applications of the different analytical techniques on several sample
matrices (food, packing, environmental issues,...)
Gradually more emphasis on integral approach regarding applied scientifical-
technological issues.

-
technological issues.
