Objectives
The course aims for following competences:
  • broadening the knowledge of herbaceous ornamentals and applying of previous courses such as floriculture and ornamental tree culture, for use in patios, gardens, and parks
  • gaining insight in different steps of garden design
  • learning how to design a private garden in a systematic way
At the end of the course the students should be able to design private gardens. Later on it's a good motivation to constantly actualize their knowledge of the overwhelming range of available ornamentals.

Topics
  • Ornamental plant cultivation in open air: use, propagation and cultivation scheme of annuals, biennials, perennials, pond plants and bulbous plants
  • Use of cd-ROM with most important data about species, cultivars (colour, flowering time, size, light and soil demands...)
  • History of garden design and garden styles
  • techniques and rules are discussed and exercised for practical garden design
  • Use of computer programs for designing gardens


Prerequisites
Knowledge and/or practical experience with garden plants, horticulture
