Key words Society, risk, biotechnology
Objectives This dual course aims for following competences:
Biosafety: gaining insight and knowledge of the risk and safety regulations when working with genetic modified organisms.
Bioethics: wants the students to reflect about their future responsibility as biotechnologists and to form an own sound opinion about the arguments pro and contra that rise from different groups in the society.
Topics The course is divided in two parts. The first part concerns biosafety. Here a survey is given of the risk and safety measurements that one has to take during laboratory work and field experiments with transgenic micro-organisms, plants and animals. This means measurements for protecting the researcher, the experiment and the environment. The relevant Belgian and European regulations are studied and the different steps to get an authorization are looked into detail.
In the second part, bioethics, a number of guest speakers give lectures about ethic, legal and social aspects of the different biotechnological applications and their consequences for the future of biotechnology.
