Key words

Objectives
This is a follow-up course of the "general materials science" from the first
year and consists of two parts, on the one hand "metals", on the other
"plastics and composites".
Metals have a key role in actual technology: a basic knowledge about the
properties of metals and their alloys is a must, also the control on
possible non visible defects.
The students do also have ideas about the structure, the possibilities and
the limitations of plastics and composites. Next they are made familiar with
a number of important concepts and processes in plastics technology.

Topics
Part 1: "Metals"
Mechanical properties; non-destructive testing; casting; welding and soldering;
alloyed and non-alloyed steel; thermal treatment of steel; cast iron; copper
and his alloys; aluminium and his alloys.
Part 2: "Plastics and composites"
Structure and properties of polymers; plastics technology; applications.
Basic materials for composites; properties; survey of the different
processing techniques of composites; apllications.

Prerequisites
The students must have a sufficient knowledge of general materials science.
