Objectives The students become familiar with cultural differences in the international English-speaking business world.
Topics Definitions of cultural concepts. Dealing with cultural stereotypes and prejudices at international negotiations, decision-making, business meetings and social contacts, wtihin the framework of the European unification and globalisation.
Becoming aware of cultural differences with reference to management styles, marketing, methods of communication and sales techniques. Hofstede's parameters. Body language and the language of presentations.
Students participate in an active way during open group discussions. Through their own experience, expectations and theoretical knowledge, they contribute in drawing general conclusions to questions and issues arising from crosscultural communication. The emphasis is on oral communication and the aim is to enhance communicative competence. The book "Language Shock" by M. Agar is read, assimilated in groups and presented to the rest of the class. Students also do a PowerPoint presentaion on a particular country.
Prerequisites At least degree higher education, 1 cycle.
