Objectives Students define correctly the function and structure of the Belgian authorities and the judiciary. They define correctly the instruments by which the civilian can protect himself against arbitrary treatment by the authorities. They indicate precisely the fundamental characteristics of a modern state (separation of powers, the rule of law,...). The students define correctly the function of human rights. They recognize the differences between the different international organisations. They indicate precisely the different norms in the whole of legal norms. They have the capacity to understand legal instruments.
Topics General principles of Belgian public law (historical introduction, the Constitution and international rules of law, the separation of powers, fundamental characteristics of the Belgian state), fundamental rights and freedoms, the Federal State (the federal parliament, the federal government, the judiciary, the Council of State), the decentralised authorities, regions and communities.
