Objectives
After the cours, the student should be able to:
  • discuss the importance of the field of microbiology to areas of agriculture and biotechnology;
  • describe procaryotic and eucaryotic morphology and systematics, growth, and metabolic characteristics;
  • discuss some of the important microbial phytopathogens;
  • know the basic techniques used in a microbiology laboratory.


Topics
The course is composed of lectures and laboratory exercises. It introduces the student to the field of microbiology and discusses the importance of micro-organisms not only as causative agents of disease and decay, but also as important contributors to food production, environmental management, antibiotic manufacture, ...
The first part of the course presents the science of microbiology, an overview of the microbial world, and a discussion of the scope and relevance of microbiology in today's society.
The second part discusses and focuses on micro-organisms that are pathogenic organisms for plants. It discusses the general characteristics of phytopathogens and describes some lifecycles that pathogens go through (transmission, colonisation, multiplication and interference).
