Objectives
The course aims for following competences:
- broadening the knowledge of herbaceous ornamentals and applying of previous courses such as floriculture and ornamental tree culture, for use in patios, gardens, and parks
- gaining insight in different steps of garden design
- learning how to design a private garden in a systematic way
At the end of the course the students should be able to design private gardens. Later on it's a good motivation to constantly actualize their knowledge of the overwhelming range of available ornamentals.
Topics The theory is divided into two parts.
- Ornamentals: annuals, biennials, perennials, shrubs and climbing plants, bulbous plants, hedges, lawn grasses
- Garden Design: garden history, modern garden styles, design principles and systems, measuring, plant choice, choice of hard elements, practical problems, drawing
Exercises and projects: drawing border, city garden, villa garden, own garden
Prerequisites knowledge about horticulture, floriculture, arboriculture, soil science
Final Objectives
- broadening the knowledge of herbaceous ornamentals and ability to apply previous courses such as floriculture and arboriculture
- gaining insight in different steps of garden design
- ability to design a private garden in a systematic and creative way
- learning to appreciate quality gardens
