Studium Generale
Objectives
Studium Generale of Hogeschool Gent undertakes to offer an additional study package. It sets out to organize an informative package of current transfer of knowledge starting from an interdisciplinary approach. Emphasis will be laid on critical examination and questioning of current fields of knowledge in a wide sense.
The series of lectures annually offered by Studium Generale aims at stimulating participants of all departments to reflect upon questions that all disciplines are confronted with. This means that an interdisciplinary scope constitutes a first requirement.
A second requirement lies in the social relevance of current critical issues.
Studium Generale will be conceived in such a way that students of all disciplines should find it easy to participate. The basic requisite is the average cultural background one might reasonably expect from a student of higher education.
Emphasis will also be laid on additional gathering of information by the participants. As the Studium Generale topics will each time be conceived in a wide, current and critical sense, the participant will be invited to produce and characterize his own spin-offs through library research and reference to other events, the Internet, press and media.
Studium Generale is meant to be a supplement to existing curricula. Criticism of present-day culture and society will serve as a basis for establishing connections between the various courses, which are left untouched in the ordinary package.
Starting from this idea Studium Generale itself will organize the widest possible range of events. (Debates, cultural evenings, workshops are within the bounds of possibility.)
Topics
Lectures on topics centring round the following:- contemporariness in all its manifestations;
- social relevance;
- critical analysis of the topics chosen;
- interdisciplinary themes.
The first Studium Generale (2002-2003) has opted for the topic of manipulation (scientific, artistic, social, ideological views and models of manipulation will be critically examined and possibly tested against one another
Prerequisites
The average cultural background one might reasonably expect from a student of higher education.

Materials used
Standard equipment for lectures: microphones, overhead projector, beamer, slides, laptop, video recorder. A specific Studium Generale website will be created.

Teaching Methods
Five lectures during the second term (target date: between the end of February and the end of April), to be held by external speakers active in those specific fields, accompanied by a co-lecture and followed by a debate. The lectures will show an accumulative character.
Assessment
First exam session: the student will be asked to write a paper, showing his/her attendance at the lectures; a critical perception of the subject presented; reflection proceeding from his/her own field of activity; consistent comments and creative documentation.
Evaluation will comprise aspects such as:- concrete textual structure (grammatical and syntactic);
- argumentation developed;
- the way in which such a text functions in the context presented by the lectures;

the cultural context to which the text discussed belongs, involving therefore a decoding of the perspective or the strategy dealt with in the text.
Size of the paper: 10 to 15 pages in correct Dutch.
Second exam session: rewriting of the paper.
