Key words Statistics, probability.
Objectives Application of basic methods in elementary probability and experimental
statistics.
Topics Part one treats a survey of elementary probability: random variable, sample space of events, axioms of probability, permutations and combinations, conditional probability and Bayes’ rule. Next the most common discrete and continuous distributions are studied.
Part two is focused on parameter estimation, hypothesis testing and introduction to regression analysis. Emphasis is made on practical applications. Considerations of theoreti- cal kind are of minor importance.
Prerequisites Some basic knowledge of mathematics, acquired in mathematics I, II & III.
Final Objectives The student should be able to judge about mean gain in simple games of chance
with stakes, costs and benefits. The student should be able to make critical reflections about general (small) talk in statistical data concerning social and political inferences. The student should be able to design elementary experiments and to analyse the resulting data.
Materials used Class notes. Some standard books on probability and applied statistics are
available. The student has statistical software at his dispoal.
