Objectives
Provide the students the knowledge and understanding in the biochemical composition of organisms and the biochemical processes.

Topics
The course reviews and explores:
- The constitution and the role of the biopolymers: the proteins, the polysaccharides, the lipids and the nucleic acids.
- The structure and physiology of the proteins in organisms.
- The enzymes: catalysis, activity, co-enzymes, inhibition, classification and applications.
- The metabolism of the saccharides.
- Formation and breakdown of lipids.
- Nitrogen metabolism.
- Introduction in regulation of the metabolism.

During the practical course, the students determinate biomolecules qualitatively and quantitatively. Activities of enzymes are estimated in all kind of products for different purposes. Biomolecules are separated with simple techniques.

Prerequisites
General organic chemistry and stereochemistry. Cell biology and basic knowledge of genetics.

Final Objectives
Basic knowledge of the characteristics, interest, interaction and applications of important biomolecules. This knowledge is important for most of the later courses

Materials used
Teacher’s course, background information, scientific and technical literature.

Study costs
Cost: 14.0 EUR
14 euro

Study guidance
Possibility to consult the teacher after the lecture/exercise or by appointment.

Teaching Methods
Lectures, exercises, individual reports, group reports, home study.

Assessment
