Key words
PLANT: Crop yield – potential and actual growth - crop transpiration – plant development – germination – crop rotation – nutrient balance - plant production systems

Objectives
ANIMAL:
Acquire a profound physiological knowledge of the digestion-processes of the animal so that the student will be able to develop problem solving and scientifically well-founded production technics, which are economically and ecologically justified and in accordance with the consumer's demands.

PLANT:
Provide to students fundamental insight in the different physiological plant processes which form the basis of crop production. In case studies the relationships between crop husbandry measures and physiological processes are made. The impact of different environmental parameters are quantified. Insight in crop production systems and crop rotation systems is also done.

Topics
ANIMAL:
  • Anatomy and physiology of the digestion system of the different farm animals; consequences for the feeding and health of these animals
  • Hormonal regulation of the metabolic live-processes

PLANT:
  • crop production systems and the agricultural ecosystem
  • eco-physiological parameters of great importance for crop production
  • sink-source relationships and their influences on crop production
  • development and growth assessment of plants
  • germination process
  • soil preparation in relation physical soil fertility and to crop production
  • crop rotation and influences on crop production

Prerequisites
ANIMAL: Knowledge of cell anatomy and of biochemistry

PLANT: Plant physiology; soil sciences

Final Objectives
ANIMAL:
Acquire a profound physiological knowledge of the digestion-processes of the animal so that the student will be able to develop problem solving and scientifically well-founded production technics, which are economically and ecologically justified and in accordance with the consumer's demands.

PLANT:
After successfully following the course the students must be capable on an individual basis to interpret the different crop husbandry measures and to analyse the components of a crop production system. With the knowledge obtained he must be able to follow more specific courses as crop sciences, crop protection, …
