Objectives The purpose of this course is a broad knowledge of horticultural growing under protection of greenhouse structures. Ornamental plants such as houseplants, young garden plants and cut flowers are treated as well as vegetable cultures in heated environments. Knowledge of the horticultural code of nomenclature and of growing properties of the most important crops are essential to learn horticultural practices.
Topics Some important floricultural crops are studied in detail : Azalea, roses, orchids, Araceae, chrysanthemum, Gerbera, Ficus, Bromeliads… The origin of the plants, relevant botanical properties and cultivar assortment are described. Also cultivation aspects , propagation, flowering control, substrates, climatological conditions, keepabilty and commercialisation are discussed.
The most important vegetable cultures are tomato, cucumber, courgette, sweet pepper, lettuce, endive, asparagus, strawberry, field salad, sellery and radish. Attention is given to botanical origin and properties, cultivars, culture of young plants, cultivation schemes , nutrition and growth factors, diseases and pests, harvest , storage and trade.
Prerequisites Knowing and being able to apply principles of horticultural plant cultivation and techniques .
Final Objectives Obtain basic knowledge of floriculture and vegetable growing under protection and gain application of techniques in the nursery

Teaching Methods Oral presentations including a lot of illustrations and living material during practical sessions and study visits.
Assessment Theoretical examination in two parts (A = 40% and B = 40% of points) and permanent evaluation during practical work and visits ( 20%)
