Objectives
Mean objective is to obtain a fundamental and practical knowledge of the animal and micro-organisms which cause plant diseases and pests. Student must also insight:
  • into the mean parameters which are responsible for the development of epidemic diseases and pests
  • weed flora of the indigenous crops
  • the most important control strategies of plant diseases, pests and weeds


Topics
  • Morphology, symptoms, biology, ecology, detection techniques of the most important phytopathogenic micro-organisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi and nematodes)
  • Morphology, symptoms, biology, ecology, detection techniques of the most important crop pests (mites, insects, birds, …)
  • Weed biology of the weed species of the mean crops in NW- Europe
  • Control strategies (prevention, biological, ethological, physical, …, integrated control)


Prerequisites
Plant- and animal science; Biochemistry

Final Objectives
After successfully following the course the students must be able to identify plant diseases , -pests and weeds and must be able to assess their impact on crop yield. On an individual basis the student must also be able to make the relation between the crop system, environmental parameters and the presence of a disease, pest or the presence or weed species.
