Key words soil science, agricultural engineering, stone, water, soil analyses
Objectives The course enables the student to practically use the acquired knowledge in the different aspects of soil science and cultivation techniques. The student disposes of the necessary skills to interpret and improve the different physical and chemical soil properties.
Topics
- Soil composition: mineral and organic components
- Soil formation (weathering, eluviation, illuviation)
- Soil profile and horizons, soil classification and soil survey
- Physical and chemical soil properties
- Soil pollution and analyses
- Behaviour of water in the soil, drainage, irrigation
- Agricultural engineering techniques
Prerequisites None
Final Objectives
- The student learns the soil composition and knows how to measure it.
- He can use this knowledge to predict the value of a soil in terms of raising plants on it.
- Furthermore, he can interfere to ameliorate growing conditions.
- The student is capable to do soil cultivations in a correct way, the student can adjust the soil machines, so they work correctly in specific conditions and the student can also do the most important and simple maintenance of the soil machines.
- In a certain soil condition, the students have to be able to determine the water condition of the soil, and decide what kind of treatment should have been taken to make the situation better. The students have also to know a various kind of drain- and irrigation techniques.
Materials used Lecture notes 'Bodemkunde' (G. BAERT), in Dutch
Course ‘Cultuurtechniek’ (L. HANNES), in Dutch
Course ‘Landbouwwerktuigen’ (L. van Wingerden) in Dutch
Study costs Cost: 45.0 EUR Course € 20
Excursion € 25
Study guidance Permanent possibility for questioning, guidance and coaching.
Teaching Methods Lectures combined with fieldwork.
The practice will be followed in centres who has a large amount of different kinds of machines.
The practical part of "Cultuurtechniek" exists in resolving a few practical problem situations.
