Objectives The student will learn the basic principles, use, analysis and calculations of different types of pumps and compressors
Topics A. Centrifugal pumps : construction. Types. Impeller. Velocity triangles. Pump head. Characteristic curves. Efficiency. Capacity regulation. Pump selection. Cavitation. Stability. Specific speed. Series and parallel operation. Special impeller pumps. Exercices.
B. Piston pumps : construction. Valves. Pressure calculation. Accumulators. Axial and radial piston pump.
C. Special pump types : External and internal gear pump. Screw pump. Van pump. Lobe pump.
D. Compressors : one stage and muti-stage piston compressors. Rotary cmpressors. Screw compressor. Axial compressor.
Prerequisites End competences acquired in : Mathematics I and II , Mechanics I and II
Final Objectives AWC2 : The student will be able to calculate and analyse theortically the working principles of pump and compressors.
ATC2 : the student understands the technical working and function of most pumps and compressors.
SC2,SC6 : the student provides industrial solutions related to machinery for transport and compression of fluid and gasses.

Teaching Methods Lectures and practical work
Assessment Exam : oral examination with written preparaion. Written exercise(66%).
Written report and oral assessment of project work (34%)
However, if a student gains a score of 7 or less on 20 on one of the different courses (parts of training items), he proves that his skill for certain subcompetencies is insufficient. Consequently, one can turn from the arithmetical calculation of the final assignment of quotas of a training item and the new marks can be awarded on consensus. Of course the examiners can judge that the arithmetic regulations mentioned in the study index card can also be used for 7 or less.
For each deviation a detailed motivation ought to be drawn up. In that case one should point out that the skill for this subcompetency is proven to be insufficient, if the student didn’t pass the partim that is considered to be important for certain subcompetencies.
