Objectives
This course aims at making students familiar with spreadsheets.
Emphasis is put on an efficient use of the software in economic applications.
Students learn how to work with spreadsheets in an independent and accurate manner.

Topics
  • Revision of basic techniques of a spreadsheet under Windows, such as using of formulae; laying out worksheets; printing; band names; basic functions (for example sum, average, max, min, number)
  • Handling graphs: making, making up and adjusting graphs
  • Managing lists: drawing up lists; validation; sorting; filtering lists (automatic filter, expanded filters); database functions; subtotals; rotation graphs
  • In-depth study: date and time functions, logical functions, financial functions, search functions, conceiting of functions, …
  • Basic macros and hyperlinks
  • Group-oriented exercises and cases


Prerequisites
  • Being able to make efficient use of the possibilities of the operating system most in demand and having basic keyboard skills
  • Elementary knowledge of the basic techniques of a spreadsheet is recommended. There will be a test to detect the level of the basic competencies. The first weeks will be differentiated and possibly delay with certain students can be eliminated.

  • Syllabus with practical exercises (available at the service for courses)
  • Lessons available through the internal network may be copied onto CD-rom in class
  • PC with Office-software; students who do not have a computer of their own may operate computers after the lessons.

Syllabus: unit price determined under Hogeschool rules, around 300 pages.

Study guidance
  • A test at the beginning of the course will determine the level of the basic competencies concerning spreadsheets, so that it is possible to work differentiated in the first weeks
  • Monitoring and coaching students during guided self-study.
  • Guidance possible through electronic teaching environment


Teaching Methods
  • Through question-and-answer method, guided and individual exercises with the computer you understand the software.
  • The lecturer will coach you during your guided self-study (various exercises and assignments that you prepared independently)


Assessment
  • First exam session: 80 % exam with practical application on the computer, being able to carry out the given assignments correctly within the given time and 20 % continuous assessment.
  • Second exam session: 100 % exam with practical application on the computer. Within the given time being able to carry out the given assignments correctly.
