Objectives The environment official is a team-player who has to be able to draw up a scientifically funded advice for the policy of a company or a public/private establishment.
He/she gains the advice of professionals. An environment official has to have a thorough command of the basic knowledge of the terminology, the concepts and the processes of physical geography.
He also has to gain insight in the impact of human activities on the physical space. In this course 'Environmental geography' students are trained to recognise, describe and evaluate the impact of the natural processes and the human use of space and behaviour in the ecosystem.
Topics Deepening of the most important physic-geographical phenomena that occur in the West-European space.
The students also get an overview of the existing cartographic techniques and the cartographic material (cable-detection).
The subject matter consists of 5 items, namely: cartography and aerial photography, environment consisting of living organisms and environment not consisting of living organisms, the atmosphere (with an expanded part "climate change"), the lithosphere (with an expanded part "soil science") and the hydrosphere.
Prerequisites Elementary knowledge of the geography of Belgium.
Final Objectives Knowledge
Job-related (specific):- Having insight in the geographical aspects of the ecosystem
- Having sufficient knowledge of the technical terminology, also in French and in English

Teaching Methods Alternation of active lectures and interactive teaching.
Computer, beamer, dvd, slides, video recordings, publications, … are used in class.
During some pedagogical excursions the knowledge is tested to the practical reality of the profession.
Assessment
- First exam session: 20% filing card of reading and oral presentation and 80% written exam
- Second exam session: 100% written exam
