Objectives This course aims at making students familiar with spreadsheets.
Emphasis is put on an efficient use of the software in business applications.
Students have to learn how to work with spreadsheets independently and accurately in their professional practice (they will, for instance be able to develop a simple stock control system.
Topics Revision of basic techniques of a spreadsheet under Windows, such as - Using formulae
- Laying out worksheets
- Printing
- Range names
- Basic functions (for example sum, average, max, min, number, numberarg)
Handling graphs- Making graphs
- Making up graphs (i.al. data series and points, titles, legend, axes, text fields …)
- Adapting graphs (i.al. adding and removing data series, changing type of chart)
Managing lists- Drawing up lists
- Validation
- Sorting
- Filtering lists (automatic filters, extended filters)
- Database functions
- Subtotals
- Pivot tables
In-depth study- In-depth study of functions: date and time functions, logical functions, search functions, nesting functions

Prerequisites
- Being able to make efficient use of standard capabilities of the operating system and having basic keyboard skills (acquired at the and of the Communication Skills course).
- Elementary knowledge of the basic techniques of a spreadsheet is recommended. There will be a test to detect the level of basic skills so differentiation will be possible in the first few weeks and arrears can be mended.
- If a student does not have elementary knowledge of basic spreadsheet techniques, it is strongly advised to take the bridging course 'Introduction to Excel'.

Materials used
- Syllabus with practical exercises available through the school's course service.
- Lessons available on the internal network may copied onto CD-rom.
- PC with Office-software; between lessons, students may train on computers in the students' computer room

Study guidance
- At the beginning of the course there will be a test to detect the level of basic spreadsheet skills and in the first weeks there will be a differentiated approach.
- Monitoring and coaching students during guided self-study.
- Coaching by means of the electronic learning environment.
Teaching Methods
- Question-and-answer method, guided and individual exercises on the computer.
- The lecturer will coach you during guided self-study.
Assessment First exam session: - 20 % continuous assessment, 80 % exam with practical application on the computer, executing the tasks correctly within the time frame.
Second exam session: - 100 % exam with practical application on the computer, executing the tasks correctly within the time frame.
