Key words Transport geography, IWETO codes S230 economic geography, t003 transport technology
Objectives Students get an understanding of the spatial dimension of economic activity, esp. in transport.
Spatial differences lead to spatial interaction: students are given the necessary keys to answer not only the questions "what" and "where", but also "why there?"
Students are expected to design a file of "mental maps".
Topics Spatial patterns of transportation are analysed.
After a brief survey of the main laws of transport economics, principles of geographical localisation are covered and illustrated.
Spatial aspects for different modes of transport are discussed: road transport, railroad transport, inland shipping, ocean shipping and possibly air transport and pipelines. Multimodal transport is also covered.
The position of Flanders and Flemish transport infrastructure is fitted in European space.
Prerequisites Notions of spatial configuration (cartography) in the European Union
Final Objectives Knowledge:
Job-related:- Knowing transport geography
- Knowing professional literature
Materials used The entire range of modern apparatus, from computer and beamer to overhead projector and video / dvd is used.

Study guidance Lecturers may be reached by e-mail.
Teaching Methods Theory is taught in an active lecture, with a discussion forum.
Students are encouraged to think with "mental maps". A few case studies are used to produce keys for analysing and optimizing cases. Excursions (see: project work and excursions) are prepared in class and discussed afterwards.
