Objectives
Students get an understanding of the spatial dimension of economic activity, esp. in transport.
Spatial differences lead to spatial interaction: students are given the necessary keys to answer not only the questions "what" and "where", but also "why there?"
Students are expected to design a file of "mental maps".

Topics
Spatial patterns of transportation are analysed.
After a brief survey of the main laws of transport economics, principles of geographical localisation are covered and illustrated.
Spatial aspects for different modes of transport are discussed: road transport, railroad transport, inland shipping, ocean shipping and possibly air transport and pipelines. Multimodal transport is also covered.
The position of Flanders and Flemish transport infrastructure is fitted in European space.

Prerequisites
Notions of spatial configuration (cartography) in the European Union
