Objectives
To communicate efficient and effective is important in professional life as well as in life in society and studying.
  • In all advisories the representatives from the trade and industry draw attention to the importance of communication skills: communication is one of the top 5 points of interest and the directors of companies declare that most problems in the company can be traced back to communication problems.
  • The profiles in employment advertisements state that graduates, regardless of their main subject, should have communicative and social skills. It is those higher order skills that make the applicant stand out.
  • Communication and social skills are indispensable in social life. Man surpasses the boffin by means of practice in speaking skills and lifelong learning. Communication skills are essential for handling all other sections of this education.
Learning to use professional software packages is indispensable to be able to deal with an automated environment.
This course aims at making students familiar with a word-processing program, a presentation package, internet, e-mail.

Topics
Section communication skills:
The content of the course is offered in a concentric way.
The three main parts are:
  1. analysis of the communication task
  2. text structure
  3. expressing the business message
Section applied information technology:
  1. BIN-standards
  2. WinZip
  3. E-mail
  4. Word-processing : structure of page, dividing documents into sections, headings and footnotes, paging, fields, formats, numbering, numbered headings and surveys, footnotes and closing rates, table of contents, tables, stencils, mailing, graphic difficulties, internet.
  5. Presentation package : making a presentation, adjusting the contents and design of a presentation, reproductions, models, stencils, organigrams, flowcharts, use of slides, printing.


Prerequisites
Section communication skills: Sufficient knowledge of Standard Dutch to be able to follow the lessons.

Section applied information technology:
  • Being able to type blindly is an asset (10)
  • Being able to work with common operating systems
  • Being able to look up information on the internet
  • Being able to handle word-processing programs smoothly and efficiently


Final Objectives
Communication skills I teaches the basic competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes) necessary to communicate efficiently in Standard Dutch. Moreover, the student learns to use common software effectively and efficiently.

  • Basic concepts from communication theory
  • Relevant text structures
  • Basic concepts of style
Skills:
  • handling of strategies for analysing real communication assignments
  • handling of methods for analysing the construction and coherence of professional messages
  • producing of consistent professional messages by means of methods of structuring
  • being able to formulate correctly, clearly, suitable and attractively
  • being able to carry out an assignment efficiently with the help of a suitable software package with an eye to output· having a critical approach to the data to be processed (text, figures, graphic objects) in order to enter them precisely, accurately, orderly and neat in accordance with the BIN-standards.

Assessment
First exam session:
  • 50 % Section Communicative Abilities: written exam with open, closed and multiple-choice questions
  • 50% Section Applied Information Technology: permanent assessment (being able to perform the assignments correctly within the given time)
Second exam session:
  • 50 % Section Communicative Abilities: written exam with open, closed and multiple-choice questions
  • 50% Section Applied Information Technology: exam with execution on the computer (being able to perform the assignments correctly within the given time)
Students who only register to take examinations:
First and second exam session:
  • 50 % Section Communicative Abilities: written exam with open, closed and multiple-choice questions
  • 50% Section Applied Information Technology: exam with execution on the computer (being able to perform the assignments correctly within the given time)
Students who have not passed in the first exam session, but got a score of at least 10 on 20 for one of the parts, are not obliged to redo this part in the second exam session of the same year. They, however, have to take the exam on the parts where they had less than 10 on 20, if they do not do this they are listed as being absent for the whole course.
