Objectives Orthopedagogics is a science of 'acting' and practice. During the whole study period, attention is given to the fact that 'acting' is based on theoretical insights, and theory is always grounded in practice. The integration of theory and practice is the main focus of this course, as students focus on the most important theoretical frameworks in orthopedagogics. Therefore, this course can be considered as the finalisation of the theoretical aspect within the study and aims at encouraging students to critically review existing theoretical (orthopedagogical) frameworks. Moreover, this course aims at showing students the importance of 'life-long' learning, as orthopedagogics is a science which is continually in evolution.
Topics The following orthopedagogical theories can be discussed:
1. Holistic theory - potential authors E. Broekaert
2. Psychodynamic theory - potential authors F. Morisse, E. De Belie
3. Humanistic theory - potential authors J. O'Brien
4. Behavioral theory - potential authors H. Spanjaard
5. Orthopedagogical theory - potential authors A. Van Gennep
6. Developmental-dynamic theory - potential authors A. Dosen
Prerequisites The students should have integrated the contents of 'Orthopedagogiek 1 en 2', 'Orthopedagogisch Handelen 1 en 2' and 'Orthopedagogische doelgroepen 1 en 2'
Final Objectives The students:
- read and comprehend articles and other relevant texts, supervised and supported by the teachers
- summarize the texts and develop questions which are discussed with fellow students and teachers during the coaching moments
- illustrate the theoretical frameworks with own examples from the work placement training and other practical experiences
- actively participate in coaching sessions
- are able to situate and discuss the theoretical frameworks and the associated authors
- are able to use the theoretical frameworks within 'real-life' cases

Study costs Cost: 10.0 EUR Cost of the syllabus
Study guidance The teachers will organize a coaching session related to every theoretical framework for small groups of students. Moreover, the teachers can be consulted (after making an appointment) and during and after the discussion sessions.
Electronic learning environment
Teaching Methods Discussion groups, self-study, (one-day) symposium with invited speakers and application of theories on 'real-life' cases
Assessment Written examination to assess whether or not students have integrated the theoretical insights and whehter or not the insights can be applied on a 'real-life' case (16/20).
Permanent evaluation (participation in coaching groups, participation at symposium) (4/20)
Period of examination: June
2nd examination period: written exam.
