Objectives The subject Engels: voorbereiding tot het vertalen 1 (EVV1) (English: preparation for translation 1 (EVV1)) consists of the following parts:
Translation E/N (E/D) (EVV1_EN) (Ed,Ef): When translating from English, the translation setting and correct interpretation of the source text are stressed. The source text needs to be translated into fluent and correct Dutch.
Translation N/E (D/E) (EVV1_NE) (E5): When translating from Dutch, special attention is given to applying grammatical rules the students are already familiar with or with which they are confronted for the first time. It is the intention to avoid errors caused by an all too literal conversion from Dutch into English, both with respect to grammar and vocabulary.
Vocabulary (EVV1_WO) (Ed): The objective is to systematically enlarge the vocabulary students acquired during their secondary school training with some 3000 words and expressions.
Reading List (EVV1_LL) (Ef): The aim is to allow students to read some classics from the Anglo-Saxon literature and culture.
Topics Partim Translation E/D:
General texts (advanced/proficiency) are translated paying special attention to structural issues on a text and sentence level, to grammar and spelling. Students are also confronted with an extensive set of typical translating challenges, mostly false friends and specifically cultural translation problems. Also the professional working conditions of the translator are discussed.
Partim Translation D/E:
Sentences and short general texts are translated, paying attention to the contrast between Dutch and English with respect to idiomatic expressions, spelling, vocabulary and grammar. In view of the teaching method, the material does not follow a prescribed order but most of the main issues are repeatedly dealt with.
Partim Vocabulary:
A series of diverse, general topics are discussed in this course. The topics have been subdivided into a number of units about one specific theme (e.g. the press, public transport, education, the environment). The terminology is mainly introduced using cloze exercises. In this way students learn to derive the meaning of new words from the context. At the same time familiar terms are repeated in the texts used. In addition to looking for an English explanation or synonym for the new words, also an equivalent in Dutch needs to be found. If relevant, differences between Belgian, British or American social, political and cultural background are highlighted. Attention is also given to American variants of British English and to the register (formal/informal) of specific words. The course also contains exercises on synonyms, antonyms, collocations and idioms. Starting from these, students learn to use explanatory and translating dictionaries.

Study guidance Partim Translation E/D: Coaching: Integrated coaching. In the course of the academic year students are given a test to assess their translating skills. The mark given is merely indicative and will not count towards their examination result.
Partim Translation D/E (E5): Coaching: Also comprises a test to assess the students’ translation skills. The mark given is merely indicative and will not count towards their examination result.
Teaching Methods Partim Translation E/D: Seminar. Part of the course is devoted to translation challenges specific for E/D. In the second part, texts are actively translated. The students are given translation assignments they are to do at home and which will be discussed in class. Partim Translation D/E:Seminar focussing on competence learning. Students translate individually or in group. The translation is then discussed in class using some the different versions. Partim Vocabulary:Seminar combined with self-study. Assessment Partim Translation E/D:
Written examination :
1) Translation of original and not-discussed English text, using an English explanatory dictionary and Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal.
2) Translation of text larded with typical translation problems, mostly false friends.
Partim Translation D/E:
Written examination: translation of a number of not-discussed Dutch sentences or short text fragments using an English explanatory dictionary. Sentence structures, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions referred to in class are part of these sentences/fragments and will be specially scrutinised.
