Objectives
The course of English grammar (Engels: grammatica 2 (EGR2)) is a sequel to the grammar course in the first Bachelor year, and aims at an in-depth study of problem areas in English grammar. The course aims to be practical (correct use of grammar when producing texts), but also offers a minimum of theory, so that students can reflect on grammar problems and offer solutions.

Topics
The course has a linear structure. The subject-matter of the first Bachelor year (tenses, modality) is dealt with in two revision units. Other problem areas from English grammar, which were only briefly touched upon in the first-year ‘Basics’ course, are studied in greater depth. The emphasis is on the noun phrase (nouns, adjectives, articles, pronouns and determiners), adverbial adjuncts, and non-finite constructions (infinitives and gerunds). Contrasts with Dutch, and occasionally with other languages, are pointed out where necessary.

Prerequisites
Students need to have attained the final objectives of the first-year grammar course (‘Engels – Grammatica 1’)

Final Objectives
Students should be able to:
- recognize grammar problems in English in a large number of areas, and offer solutions.
- Use the rules of grammar correctly when producing texts in English
- make discerning use of the appropriate sources when solving and reflecting on grammatical problems.
