Doelstellingen
This course aims at teaching students a number of basic interpreting skills necessary in specific areas, but also at stressing the importance of the ethical and professional duties of the community interpreter.
Leerinhoud
Historic development of the profession in various sectors, note taking technique, consecutive interpreting, whispering interpreting (simultaneous), telephone interpreting, court interpreting, hospital interpreting, police interpreting, telephone tapping, institutional interpreting (education, social care, immigration services, child care and other such fields).
Begincompetenties
The student is able to:
- understand and reproduce into another language, spoken and written text from various professional backgrounds; the texts concerned having a higher than normal difficulty level,
- to use the necessary heuristic tools adequately and scrupulously.
Eindcompetenties
The student is an apt and effective community interpreter, able during triad conversations, to bridge the language gap between a local care provider or government official and a foreign language speaker in need of care or services. Therefore, the student must be able to interpret bi-directionally, both from and into his or her mother tongue. He must also be familiar with the relevant cultural, linguistic and institutional characteristics of the parties involved.

Video recordings of interpreting sessions. Powerpoint presentations about the structures and terminology specific to the fields concerned. Publications on the challenges and the interpreting issues specific to the various fields in which community interpreting may be necessary.

Handouts: the cost is included in the lump price charged for course material.
Studiebegeleiding
Teachers' consultation hours. The teacher may refer to material at the Faculty’s library or to an interpreting service in Flanders or the Netherlands. Students may also contact the lecturer by e-mail for study guidance or if they want concrete counselling on finding employment as a community interpreter.
