Objectives
A systematic botanical study provides insight into the large assortment of trees and shrubs which are applied in amenity, urban environment and gardens.
Recognition of trees and shrubs in summer and in dormant stage is exercised. Besides some nursery productions are visited. The obtained knowledge increases professional success in hardy nursery stock production or amenity gardening.

Topics
General characteristics of woody plants in comparison with herbaceaous plants
Systematic overview as well as botanical characteristics of trees and shrubs with relevance for nursery stock or forestry. This includes origin, ecology, growth pattern, propagation, applications and cultivars.
Productions systems in arboriculture: container nursery, youngplant production, avenue trees, rose shrub production, forest transplants

Prerequisites
Succeeded for ‘Anatomy and morphology of vascular plants’ and ‘Horticultural plants and techniques’

Final Objectives
1. Recognition of most common (ornamental) trees and shrubs
2. Implementation of cultural techniques for hardy nursery crops
3. Knowledge of the use of trees for environment and society
