Objectives Pomology is one of the cornerstones of horticulture. The aim is to gain knowledge and insight in the pomology of the temperate climate zones, which is essential for a job this discipline, as breeder, supplier, producer, marketeer, researcher). Theoretical aspects are supplemented with practical exercises and visits to commercial companies and research institutes.
Topics 1. The culture of:
- Pomaceous fruit: apple, pear, Japanese pear, quince, medlar
- Stone fruit: sweet and sour cherry, plum, peach, apricot
- Berries: ribes, rubus, vaccinium
- diverse fruit species: actinidia, vitis, cornus,
- nuts: walnut, hazelnut, chestnut
- tropical fruit: recognizing imported fruit
2. Items discussed per species:
- Flowering, pollination and fertilization
- Fruit formation and ripening

Final Objectives 1. systematic knowledge and insight in the different aspects of fruit growing, including the problems, new developments and the links with other disciplines
2. ability to recognize temperate fruit species and the important imported tropical fruit species
General competences:
Ability to interprete the way theories can evolve. (pruning theory)
