Key words topography, land surveying, GPS, GNSS, satellite positioning, total station, GIS, geographic information system, software
Objectives Partim Topografie II-
Teaching of an insight in land surveying methods with modern equipment (total stations, GPS)
- Teaching of an insight in satellite positioning systems (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, Egnos, ...), with emphasis on the functioning principles of GPS and recent developments (RTK, FLEPOS, ...).
- Reference systems: the student is made familiar with a number of basic concepts in geodesy (geoid, ellipsoid, coordinate systems), commonly used reference systems in Belgium with the emphasis on GPS.
- The student learns to work with total stations for measuring and staking out.
Partim GIS I
Acquiring an insight in geographic information systems.
Learning how a GIS can be used to combine, process, visualize and analyze spatial data and how it can be used for decision support.
Topics Partim Topografie II
- Measuring and staking out using total stations: functioning of totalstations, special functions.
- Satellite positioning: GPS: components, basic principles, measuring methods, error sources, recent developments concerning GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and others, correction systems, overview of GNSS, FLEPOS.
- Reference systems: basis concepts, geoid, local and global ellipsoid, geodetic datum, coordinate systems, official planimetric and altimetric reference systems in Belgium
- The students use total stations to collect data and for stake out exercises. The collected data is processed with land surveying software. Special attention goes to coded measurement techniques in view of generating maps in a semi-automatic way.
Partim GIS I
- The purpose of a GIS, terms and definitions, elements of a map, components of a GIS, functions of a GIS, spatial data structures, map layers, data structures, digitizing spatial information, geocoding of geographical phenomena, georeferencing, visualisation, consultation and analysis possibilities, quality of the data, metadata applications
ArcView 9.x
- In the workshops (individual on pc) the emphasis lies on the practical applications on the dealt with subjects.
Prerequisites Partim Topogafie II
The final objectives of TOPOGRAFIE I.
Partim GIS I
Base knowledge of informatics, data structures, relational database, map projections and map properties
Final Objectives Key competence 1: To be able to apply landsurveying techniques. [SC6]
Amongst others:
- To be able to use total stations for measurement and stake out
- To be able to use land surveying software in order to transform field data into a correct map of the existing terrain situation using point and line codes
- To be able to decide on the most appropriate measuring techniques and instrument choice given a specific context
Key competence 2: To be able to interpret and visualize information with a geographical dimension. [SC7]
Amongst others:
- To be able to master the basic functions of a GIS (ArcGIS)
- To be able to use a GIS correctly to combine and visualise spatial data for decision support.
- To be able to produce cartographically correct maps.
General competence 1: To be able to assimilate, implement and use relevant existing and new technologies and/ or theories concerning GIS and topography. [AIC2]
Amongst others:
- To be able to assess and - if advisable - implement new techniques in the field of land surveying, in the broadest sense.
- To be able to apply scientific and technical insights concerning topography and GIS, independently and in team, on scientific and/ or engineering problems and to be able to communicate about that clearly and efficiently.
General competence 2: To be able to collect and process relevant scientific and technical information adequately. [AC2]
Amongst others:
- To be able to assess available data on its quality, relevance and consistency in view of its combination and analysis in a GIS environment and additionally to be able to report about that efficiently.

Study costs Cost: 45.0 EUR Partim Topografie II
Costs linked with printing the teachers notes, reports, maps
Partim GIS I
Textbook: "Theoretische basisconcepten van GIS": approx. EUR 25
Costs linked with printing the teachers notes, reports, maps
Study guidance Personal contact with the teacher: the teachers are available outside the contact hours for answering questions and solving practical problems concerning the subdivision of training (by means of e-mail, or after appointment)
Teaching Methods Partim Topografie II
Lectures, workshops, practical exercises.
Partim GIS I
Lectures, demonstrations, workshops, practical exercises on PC.
Assessment Theory: Oral examination with written preparation.
Workshops: permanent evaluation; individual and group reports, knowledge test.
Partitioning:
Topografie II theory: 20%
Topografie II workshops: 30%
GIS I theory: 20%
GIS I workshops: 30%
The final score is the result of the arithmetic average according to the coefficients granted to each subdivision (20 - 30 - 20 - 30). If, however, the assessment of one of the subdivisions (Topografie II theory - Topografie II workshops - GIS I theory - GIS I workshops) is less than 7/20 it is possible to deviate from this arithmetic calculation. In this case a new assessment will be made.
