Key words
geodesy, map-making, map projection systems, distortions, equidistance, equivalence, conformity, coordinate systems, geodetic datum, UTM- coordinates, Lambert- coordinates

Objectives
Fundamentals of geodesy: the student is familiarized with a number of basic concepts of the geodesy and the developments concerning the reference frames used in Belgium and the use of GPS.
Map projections: the different map projections are treated in a mathematical way and their properties inferred. The student gets insight in the practical use of different map projections, their specific properties and distortions and in the most frequently used coordinate systems (UTM, Lambert 72, WGS84,…) in Belgium.

Topics
Fundamentals of geodesy: position of geodesy within earth sciences, history of earth measuring, basis concepts, physical and mathematical models of the earth, geodetic and astronomic coordinates, definition of geodetic datum, datum transformations, important datums and their relations. The evolutions in Belgium and Flanders are followed up (Lambert 2005, Flepos, GIS-Vlaanderen)
Map projections: indicatrix of Tissot, distortions, properties of map projections azimuthal projections, cylindrical projections, cone projections, inferred projections (e.g.. Lambert, UTM, Bonne). The importance of the distortions and the choice of a geodetic datum is illustrated by means of GIS demonstrations

Prerequisites
basic knowledge of differential mathematics, triangle geometry

Final Objectives
Key competence 1: To be able to produce cartographically correct maps. [SC8]
Amongst others:
  • To have an insight in the distortions connected with certain map projection systems and to be able to choose a suitable projection system in function of the geographical position of the area to be mapped and the desired map properties.
  • To be able to use the different coordinate systems in use in Belgium and to understand the connection between the different geodetic reference systems concerning the use of GPS.
  • To have an insight in problems linked with coordinate and datum transformations and to be able to apply the obtained knowledge in a specific context.
General competence 1: To be able to display an insight in the relations between several scientific disciplines in order to understand technical problems and processes. [AIC3]
Amongst others:
  • To be able to analyze and solve problems concerning the choice of the appropriate measuring techniques, instruments and reference frames.
  • To be able to understand technical and scientific articles applicable to the treated matter.
General competence 2: To be able to apply scientific insights, independently and in team, on scientific and/ or engineering problems. [AIC1]
Amongst others:
  • To be able to apply scientific and technical insights on specific land surveying problems particularly concerning the use of geodetic datums in combination with GPS, the possibilities and restrictions of geodetic reference frames.
