Key words Industrial Chemistry
Objectives The cursus aims at giving an overview of the chemical (organic) industry.
The student must acquire insight in the structure and the specific aspects of the chemical industry. This is realised by means of an overview of the quantitatively most important industrial chemical products and their mutual relations. The student has to be capable of describing and explaining with the aid of simple flowsheets chemical production processes (consistency and objective of the different process steps) and acquires some ideas concerning project planning and process development.
The student must also acquire insight in steam and use of it in technical processes.
By means of visits to chemical production plants, the student is faced with the industrial chemistry in real dimensions. The importance of chemistry in the society and the social, economical, environmental and security-aspects are in this way highlighted.
The student must independently carry out experiments, and interpret and question his results. By means of extra information the student has to judge a case-study.
Topics Oil refinery and different productions processes (alkenes, aromatics, synthesis gas, methanol, urea, ethylene oxide and polyethylene)
Project planning, flowsheeting and process development.
Steam training course at Spirax-Sarco.
Prerequisites Competences acquired in chemical base courses.
Final Objectives Specific competence 1:
To be able to acquire profound knowledge and skills in industrial organic chemistry and to acquire chemical-technological knowledge and to resolve practical problems (SC1, SC5)
Specific competence 2:
To be able to understand and explain industrial chemical production processes (SC4),
amongst other:
- to be able to implement scientific-disciplinary insights on complex engineering technical problems (AIC1)
General competence 1:
To be able to think, to judge and to act permanently in a critical, creative and scientific way in the field of industrial organic chemistry (AC1)
General competence 2:
To be able to cooperate in a multidisciplinary environment in the field of industrial organic chemistry (AWC4)

A weighted average is used to compute the final score for a training item. However, if a student gains a score of 7 or less on 20 on one of the different courses (parts of training items), he proves that his skill for certain subcompetences is insufficient. Consequently, one can turn from the arithmetical calculation of the final assignment of quotas of a training item and the new marks can be awarded on consensus.
