Key words Biochemical Technology
Objectives To obtain an in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of production processes in biochemical and biotechnological industries.
Topics The structure and functioning of different types of bioreactors are being discussed, with special attention to mixing and aeration. Next to the use of bacterial cultures are also the specific needs of animal cell cultures discussed. An oversight is given of the different techniques in down-stream processing to obtain a commercial product.
Attention is being given to thermal destruction protocols for micro-organisms and cleining and desinfection in the industrie.
Prerequisites Biochemistry, microbiology, molecule biology, physico-chemistry, basic engineering techniques.
Final Objectives Core competence 1:
To be to acquire field-specific knowledge and practical skills in order to design and monitor biochemical production processes (SC4, SC5) and deal with production processes and laboratory environments in environmentally sensible and safe manner (SC7)
Core Compentence 2:
To be able to implement research methods and research techniques in an effective way (AWC1)
General competence :1
To be able to think, to judge and to act permanently in a critical, creative and scientific way in order to solve complex problems effectively and to judge and to handle within an uncertain context with the necessary critical introspection. (AC 1, AC3, AC5)
General engineering competences
To be able to implement scientific-disciplinary insights en relevant new technologies and/or theories on complex engineering technical problems (AIC1, AIC2)
