Objectives Accompanying practice for keyboards, guitars and harp aims at a broadening of the practical applicability of the knowledge and skills acquired during the classes of ‘Solo Practice: Instrument’ and ‘Harmony and Counterpoint’. As these aims are long-term, it needs to be continued in the Masters.
Topics In general terms, this unit involves the study of on the fly harmonisation of bass assignments and melodies while playing the instrument and the mastering of typical, practical skills needed for exercising the profession.
The study unit Accompanying Practice for Keyboard Instruments consists of the four following parts:
• Practical Harmony: fifth chords, sixth chords and six-four chords. Simple modulations to related tonalities (especially to the dominant and the relative scales). Aim: harmonisation of folksongs, with the students not playing the melody.
• Filling the blanks exercises: two-voice piano literature (organ, harpsichord), four-voice playing leading to the understanding of harmonic structures.
• Analysis: Explaining 3 piano works from various style periods at the keyboard (basic harmonic structure).
• Reading: Three-line choir scores.
