Objectives The study unit Large Ensemble aims at realizing the cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects of cooperation with other musicians.
In concrete terms, the student learns how to make music in Large ensembles such as a symphonic orchestra, a string orchestra, or a wind orchestra.
During section repetitions he learns how to fit in his own playing in his own orchestra section, and during the tutti rehearsals he learns how to hold his own in the entire orchestra. This is a long-term process and therefore needs to be continued during the Masters.
Topics Organisation
The productions are announced at the start of the academic year.
The students are told well beforehand which productions they need to collaborate on.
Productions
- productions with a string orchestra (one or two)
- productions with a wind orchestra (one or two)
- productions with a symphonic orchestra (planned on a yearly basis)
- productions in collaboration with the conservatories of Tilburg and Maastricht (one).
Projects with a guitar orchestra or a clarinet choir may also be set up, but they are not part of the regular productions.
These productions are practised during the weekly two-hour repetitions.
They will be played during concerts at various locations, both at and outside the Department.
All students qualifying for collaboration on these productions should keep themselves available even during holiday periods.
Content
Educational content is topically ordered according to the planned productions.
The repertoire is chosen so as to familiarize the students with the various style periods the orchestra’s complement allows for. Ample attention is paid to contemporary repertoire. The programming also includes Belgian/Flemish composers.
Subject to certain conditions, short works by Composition students will also be performed.
The repertoire is chosen by the lecturers who will consult the Board and take into consideration the context of the concerts.
Prerequisites Pass an admission test.

• exhibits candour, sympathy, respect and appreciation towards the responsibilities and interests of others he cooperates with.
• can cooperate with others even on a subject that is of no immediate interest to him personally.
