Objectives
The main aim of the course is to provide the students with basic information about “The Low Countries”, more specifically Belgium. Starting from their own (foreign) view on Belgium, the students will gradually get to know the complex Belgian situation (language, culture, history, politics, etc.) through examples and real-life situations.

Topics
The main topics are:
  • Belgian history and geography
  • Social and political structure of the country
  • Belgian arts and artists (painters, film makers, strip cartoonists, musicians, …)
Other topics may be explored, such as:
  • Peculiar Belgian habits (food and drink, folklore, fairs, parades, festivals, …)
  • Belgian scientists and inventors
  • Belgian colonies
  • Belgian economy


Prerequisites
Fair knowledge of English

Final Objectives
The students have basic knowledge of
  • Belgian history and geography;
  • the actual political structure of the country
  • the social economic and cultural situation of the country
The students are able to
  • Elaborate on an item concerning the Belgian society, using desk top research in order to give a presentation.
  • Share their own point of view with other students.
  • Explain a “Belgian item” to others in a comprehensive and clear way, with the help of modern communication techniques.
Dealing with tasks
  • The students attend the courses regularly.
  • The students do their work within the agreed time.
  • The students deliver a well-informed, nicely accomplished presentation + paper.

First exam session:
