Objectives
Students acquire an elementary vocabulary of some 1000 words and the basic Dutch structures.
Listening, reading, writing and speaking are practiced to cover the complete range of skills needed to communicate in a Flemish surrounding.

Topics
  • Introducing oneself and other people.
  • Giving and asking information about people’s address and phone number, asking how they are doing, reacting properly on easy questions about oneself;
  • Asking and telling what time it is, asking for help, thanking, showing the way, describing a house or an apartment, describing meals and eating habits in Belgium and other countries, formulating negative sentences
  • Apologizing, expressing an opinion, (dis)agreeing, expressing preference, giving information about widespread generalizations on the Belgian and Flemish character
  • Formulating condition, reason, irritation, doubt, fear etc
  • Going shopping in a grocery or supermarket, buying clothes, asking for price, dealing with weights and money. Making statements on things that happened in the past.


Prerequisites


Final Objectives
Students acquire a basic level of Dutch in order to understand an easy written or spoken message, they learn to take part in easy conversations with their fellow Flemish students. They can handle communication in different situations: eating out, shopping, using public transport etc;
Students gather knowledge about the Belgian/Flemish lifestyle.
A basic knowledge of Dutch enhances their possibilities of integration in the world of Flemish students.

Textbook and Exercise book. Videotape

Study costs
None. Students pay € 10 to use the textbook and exercise book. At the end of term, they give both books back in return for the € 10.

Study guidance
Classroom feedback on exercises prepared at home.

Teaching Methods
Interactive method, students practice their oral skills whenever possible.
A videotape is used as a means to help the students memorizing new words and language structures.

Assessment
  • First exam session: written exam 30% and oral exam 70%
  • Second exam session:written exam 30% and oral exam 70%
