Objectives
The course wants to give the students an understanding of the political, social and cultural institutions and of the history of mentality in Flanders and the Netherlands.
Topics
In the part Society and institutions of the Low Countries the political, social and cultural institutions in Flanders and the Netherlands (included the Nederlandse Taalunie) are studied especially from a comparative perspective, with an emphasize on the current situation. The institutions are situated within the scope of the general culture of both countries and within the current reflection about the cultural identity. In addition their origin is studied from a historical point of view if necessary. The learning content is concretized by means of current journalistic articles and other texts that are discussed during the lectures. The limited preknowledge of the students (as non-natives) about the society and institutions is taken into consideration.

Final Objectives
The student:
- has knowledge of the current situation of the society and institutions within the Dutchspeaking regions;
- can place this situation in a historical and comparative perspective;
- can approach the characteristic cultural context of Flanders and the Netherlands from an intercultural perspective;
- can look up specific information about one of the themes that are discussed and can assimilate and present it individually.
