Objectives This course will present a variety of computer tools for translators, including translation memories (SDL Trados Workbench), and machine translation tools.
This course will outline the major steps of the translation process and review the type of tools available in the market to help each step.

Overview Computer-aided Translation
Translation Memory (TM):
- Introduction to Translation Memories
- Setup of translation memory
- TM search and fuzzy matching
- Project management (word count, source text preparation and analysis)
Machine Translation:
- Introduction to Machine translation
- Error analysis, pre-and post-editing and dictionary customization
- Word alignment
Prerequisites - Basic computer skills: MS Windows environment (Windows explorer), Office (Word, Excel)
- Some translation experience
Final Objectives
Students should be able to:
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the most common translation tools (when and how to apply them)
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the techniques behind translation memories and machine translation (text segmentation, fuzzy matching, word alignment)
- demonstrate competence with SDL Trados Workbench and WinAlign
- evaluate existing machine translation programs and improve the output by applying pre- and post-editing and/or dictionary customizing
